Planning a picture perfect cake smash session

It’s here! The moment you’ve probably dreamed of since your baby arrived into the world. The adorable first birthday cake smash session!

Nowadays, creating picture-perfect moments is everything. We want to dress up the everyday, we want to make the special moments extra special, and we want to give ourselves a reason to look back on our lives as the years go on and we want to look back with joy. Let’s start with one of the first milestone moments your child will want to look back on when he or she is older- his or her first birthday. Want to make it fun, cute, and worthy of the gram?! I’m sharing a few tips to planning a picture-perfect cake smash session!

Tip #1: Choose a theme

There are so many themes out there to choose from. Whether you want to keep it simple with just a color scheme, or you want to recreate the Mad Hatter tea party from Alice in Wonderland, find a theme that speaks to you and run with it.

Tip #2: Style your session

Once you’ve decided on your theme, it’s time to start thinking of how you’re going to bring your theme to life. Balloons are always a fun decoration to incorporate. You can use them to make a statement such as building a balloon arch backdrop, or you can use them as an accent like Charleigh’s mom did with her number one balloon. In addition to balloons, other props to consider would be a cake stand, a cake topper, banners, number or letter blocks, a tea set (if you’re really wanting the Mad Hatter vibe, which is totally ADORABLE) or specific items that tie in with your theme, and a cute outfit complete with a birthday hat or headband.

Tip #3: Keep baby happy

Photoshoots with little kids do not always go the way we hope they will. To ensure lots of laughs and adorable photos, I encourage you to bring siblings or favorite family members and a favorite toy that is sure to bring a smile.
