Choosing the right getting ready space
When planning your wedding day, some details can get overlooked. Getting ready spaces are one of those things. It’s easy to think the important thing about booking a space is simply having a designated area to get ready. In actuality, the style of the space matters if you want a cohesive wedding gallery. Think of the vision you have for your day. Now, think of the style of photography you are drawn to. Do they match? I know it seems overwhelming, but taking the time to choose spaces that reflect the aesthetic of your vision will enhance the look and feel of your photos. Keep reading for tips on choosing the right getting ready space!
Tip #1: Lighting
Making sure your space has beautiful natural light is key. Think lots of windows, or at least one big one. In addition to the source of light, it’s important to consider what that light is bouncing off of. Soft, neutral colored walls are best, since the light can reflect off of them and create even more light. When I think of the getting ready part of a wedding day, I always associate it with starting fresh; embracing a new beginning. And when I think about starting fresh, I think of gorgeous light shining through my windows first thing in the morning. Choose a getting ready space that speaks to you on that level. After commenting on how much of a dream this space was for me to photograph, Bridget informed me that she chose this space specifically for the LIGHT! So much love to my bride in that moment.
Tip #2: Ample Space
So many moving parts take place in the getting ready space, which is why I recommend booking a space that allows for plenty of breathing room. Think about it. There are usually hair and make-up artists and all of their tools, plus bridal party members and mothers of the bride and groom. Not to mention ALL of the luggage and miscellaneous things everyone brings with them. Oh, and me! I document pretty much all of the bridal details and bridal party in the getting ready space until it’s time for the first look or the ceremony. And I love to photograph multiple aspects of the getting ready process. Have champagne? Let’s have some fun! Got a sweet playlist? Let’s have a dance party! Large getting ready spaces also allow for dramatic bridal portraits. And in my personal opinion, there is just something so timeless about the moments I capture in rooms like the one Bridget chose.
